A massive fire broke out on Saturday evening, May 10, at the offices of the Mombasa Water and Sanitation Company (MOWASSCO) in Mombasa’s Central Business District.
The fire incident occurred near residences along Nkrumah Road, close to the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) offices in Mombasa County.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the fire could be seen engulfing the offices, with residents watching from a distance while others used the limited resources they had to attempt to extinguish the flames.
The Mombasa County Fire Brigade responded promptly to the emergency, supported by the Kenya Red Cross. Additional reinforcement arrived from the Kenya Navy and the Kenya Ports Authority, all working together to fully contain the fire.
Response teams from the Kenya Navy and Kenya Ports Authority also arrived at the scene to help contain the fire effectively.
Fire Breaks Out at Offices of MOWASSCO
The fire continued until midnight; fortunately, the response team was able to contain it. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir commended the multi-agency response for their swift action and confirmed that no casualties were reported.
“This evening, a fire broke out at the MOWASSCO offices in Mombasa’s Central Business District. Thanks to the swift response of our County Emergency Teams, backed by crucial support from the Kenya Navy and Kenya Ports Authority, the fire has been fully contained. Three county fire engines were on site and effectively supported by our national partners to preserve life and property,” said the County boss.

At the same time, the Mombasa Governor announced that all critical data from the offices affected by the fire had been backed up and that service delivery would not be impacted.
“The County Government reassures residents that service continuity is assured. All critical data is securely backed up on cloud-based systems, and this unfortunate incident will not disrupt the delivery of services. We thank all agencies and responders for their professionalism, swift coordination, and unwavering commitment to public safety,” Abdulswamad said.
Fire Breaks Out at Tassia Area in Nairobi
This incident adds to a growing list of recent fire outbreaks reported across the country since early 2025.
On the night of Saturday, March 2, a fire broke out in the Tassia area, near Tassia SDA Church in Embakasi East, Nairobi. The blaze destroyed several properties in the Kwa Kasim neighbourhood, leaving many residents displaced.

Local residents, along with firefighters from Nairobi County, spent much of the night battling the flames. Several people were forced to spend the night in the cold after their homes were destroyed.
