A 59-year-old Kenyan has been sentenced to 11 years in prison in the United States (US) after being found guilty of fraud.
According to a statement by the Office of Public Affairs of the United States Department of Justice, the Kenyan named Paul Maucha, used his company to con American citizens.
The statement explained that the company known as the American Eagle Services Group Inc. (AESG) promised to provide loans to several victims.
However, those requiring loans were asked to pay a fee in advance before receiving the money they needed.
According to court documents and evidence presented at trial, Paul Maucha, 59, along with a co-conspirator, engaged in a scheme through a shell company Maucha controlled, American Eagle Services Group Inc.

Maucha reportedly lied to his clients about the assets the company held and how he was able to access the money he was giving out for loans.
“In particular, Maucha—through AESG—promised victims who were seeking loans that AESG would provide them with these loans.
“The victims were required to first provide AESG with an advanced fee, but the company misrepresented the purpose of that fee,” explained the statement.
Further, for assurance, he told the clients that he would return the advance fees if he did not service their loans. Instead, he spent all the money wired to him with his business partner, until the company went bankrupt.
“As proven at trial, however, Maucha and his co-conspirator knew that AESG did not have the capital to make these loans at the time the lending agreements were executed,
“And refunds to victims could not be assured because Maucha and his co-conspirator were splitting the fees between themselves and spending them, such that there was no money left to be refunded.”
Moreover, a federal jury convicted Maucha of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, and one count of engaging in monetary transactions in criminally derived property.
