The government of Rwanda granted citizenship to a renowned Kenyan journalist on Thursday, November 7. In an official gazette notice, the Rwandan government awarded former TV47 CEO Eugene Anangwe Rwandan citizenship.
The founder and CEO of East Africa Media Group was among 296 individuals born in various countries who received Rwandan nationality.
These countries included Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Guinea, Niger, Eritrea, Namibia, and Madagascar.
Anangwe took to social media to thank Rwanda President Paul Kagame after being honored with the citizenship.

“Thank you, Rwanda; here to serve you, protect you with my all! To my President Paul, Kagame, I am truly honored,”Eugene thanked the Rwandan President.
Under Rwanda’s nationality law, individuals can be granted Rwandan citizenship based on various criteria, including preferential consideration for those with specialized skills, unique talents, or significant investments that benefit the country.
While the specific reasons for each individual’s citizenship grant are not always publicly mentioned and detailed, Anangwe’s long term residence and significant contributions to the Rwanda media industry has played a role in this decision.
Anangwe moved to Rwanda in 2008 though he has taken up employment opportunities in Kenya at various times.

In Rwanda, Anangwe has also worked as a Producer and Host of In Focus Rwanda talk show between May 2017 and February 2019, during which he served as a correspondent for KTN News, part of the Standard Group.
He also served as Country Manager for CNBC Africa.

Additionally, he held roles at Contact TV as General Manager from April 2014 to September 2015, and at Contact FM as a Producer, Presenter, and News Anchor from May 2008 to March 2013.
Media houses where Eugene has worked in Kenya
Besides working in Rwanda, Anangwe has worked for notable media stations in Kenya.
He worked as a Chief Executive Officer of Look Up Media and anchored news on Look Up TV from August 2020 to May 2022.
Eugene has also worked at Cape Media as a CEO from August 2019 to August 2020. He also anchored news at the station.

Eugene is a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in Mass Media and Communication (BA) with a first-class honours degree from Mount Kenya University.
