Sally Kimondo has made history after she was elected the first black mayor of Dunstable in the United Kingdom. She was elected on Monday, 19 May 2025, during Dunstable Town Council’s 40th Annual Council Meeting.
In a statement on Monday, Dunstable Town Council announced Kimondo’s election while describing it as a historic milestone.
“We are proud to announce a truly historic milestone for our town. Sally Kimondo has officially been appointed as the first black Mayor of Dunstable,” Dunstable Town Council said.
Her leadership was described as a reflection of the town’s growing diversity and a testament to the strength of unity and community spirit.
Sally Kimondo is a Kenyan-born community leader and senior social work practitioner based in Luton, UK.
Sally Kimondo Early Life
She is the daughter of the late Hon. Kiruhi Kimondo, a former Member of Parliament for Starehe Constituency during the Moi era, and Ruth Kimondo. Sally is the proud mother of Hope Grant and has three siblings: Julie, Janet, and Eric.
Additionally, she spent her early years in the country before relocating to the UK, where she has become a passionate advocate for community cohesion and cultural diversity.
Kimondo holds a degree in Social Work from the University of Bedfordshire.

Career Background
In her role as a social worker, Sally has worked to support families and promote inclusivity across Luton and Dunstable.
She is the founder of the Luton and Dunstable Kenyan Community Foundation (LDSKCF), an organization committed to fostering unity and cultural pride within the Kenyan diaspora.
In March 2020, she launched LDSKCF with a vision of breaking down barriers of tribe, religion, gender, and age among Kenyans abroad.
The foundation not only promotes youth education and cultural identity but also facilitates dialogue between professionals and the community.
Moreover, her leadership and community dedication culminated in her historic election as the first Black Mayor of Dunstable in May 2025 a moment that stands as a powerful symbol of representation and unity.

Sally’s Challenges
But her journey was not without its challenges. Sally Kimondo has faced resistance within the Luton Kenyan Community and some local churches. Her efforts to unite diverse Kenyan tribes and promote inclusive leadership were met with discrimination, gaslighting, and online trolling.
Additionally, her attempts to involve broader regional groups led to accusations of inviting foreigners, and registering the foundation to protect its identity sparked unfounded claims of theft.
