The National Police Service (NPS) has formally recognised Chief Inspector (CI) Dr James Tindi following his successful completion of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Politics and International Relations at Pondicherry University in India.
The academic milestone was attained through a fully sponsored international scholarship, marking a notable academic achievement within the National Police Service and reinforcing NPS efforts to promote education and professional development among its officers.
According to NPS, the achievement reflects the Service’s continued emphasis on training, research, and academic advancement as part of institutional capacity building.
“This achievement is not merely an academic milestone; it is a testament to resilience, a disciplined pursuit of knowledge, and the Service’s growing culture of scholarship, excellence, and intellectual leadership,” NPS stated.
Additionally, the milestone places Dr Tindi among NPS officers who have combined operational policing with advanced academic studies.
Early Life of James Tindi and Entry into the NPS
James Tindi was born in 1981 in Waumi Village, K’ogweno Oriang’ Location, Rachuonyo North Sub-County, Homa Bay County.
His early education began at Nyakech Primary School. He later joined Otok Secondary School, a day Harambee school.
During his secondary education, he walked approximately four kilometres daily to attend classes.
In 2001, after completing secondary school, he was recruited into the National Police Service.
He undertook his initial police training at the Administration Police Training College, currently known as the National Police College – Embakasi ‘A’ Campus.

After training, he was deployed to various formations within the NPS.
Over the years, the NPS has deployed James Tindi to several units, including the Administration Police College, Kibwezi Sub-County, the Security of Government Buildings and Vital Installations unit, Lugari District, Vihiga District, and Nyayo House.
He is currently serving at Jogoo House Administration Police Service Headquarters under the Directorate of Training and Research, a key NPS directorate responsible for capacity development and institutional learning.
Academic Progress While Serving in the NPS
While serving in the National Police Service, James Tindi pursued multiple academic qualifications relevant to governance, security, and international affairs.
He obtained a Diploma in International Relations and Diplomacy from the Technical University of Kenya and a Diploma in Disaster and Emergency Management from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, where he graduated with distinction.
Additionally, he completed an International Diploma in French Language at Alliance Française in Bangalore, India.

James Tindi later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations with First-Class Honours, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in International Humanitarian Law from NALSAR University of Law in Hyderabad, India.
These qualifications were completed alongside his duties within the NPS.
Between 2017 and 2019, the NPS officer pursued a Master of Arts in Political Science at the University of Mysore under a fully sponsored Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Scholarship.
During this period, he emerged as the top student and received a Certificate of Excellence as the Best International Student in Karnataka State.
While studying in India, James Tindi was elected President of the Kenya Students’ Association. His responsibilities included coordinating student welfare, supporting new arrivals, assisting with accommodation arrangements, and engaging with relevant authorities when necessary.
His leadership role was formally acknowledged by the Kenyan High Commission in New Delhi.
