A Kenyan woman has narrated how she escaped the death penalty of being hanged after she was found in possession of 2 kilograms of methamphetamine at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Faith Omollo, who returned to Kenya in 2024 after being released from a Malaysian prison, where she was a convicted death row inmate, said that someone planted drugs in her bag, which led to her arrest and subsequent imprisonment.
The 41-year-old recounted that her troubles began when a friend told her that one of her relatives was offering a job and was looking for three Kenyans to work for her, which Omollo accepted.

“She told me that her sister-in-law has a wholesale shop where they wanted three Kenyans to go to work in those wholesale shops. I was interested in the work because she told me that we are going to be paid about Ksh 120,000,” Faith told Citizen TV.
After accepting the job offer, Faith traveled all the way to Lagos, Nigeria, to meet her potential employer.

Upon arrival, she was well-received by a couple whom she described as very religious and was not skeptical about their character.
“I could not think anything bad of them. I just said yes. So, when we reached the airport, the husband was the one who went and opened the boot of the car. That boot of the car had one maroon suitcase, but my suitcase, which I came from Kenya with, was black,” Faith further narrated.

After being hosted by the couple, Faith first traveled to Ethiopia and then to Malaysia, and that is when then hell broke loose.
“Upon arriving in Malaysia, someone shouted, ‘Africa, Africa!’ then I looked at my bag. When I looked at my bag, he asked me where I was going, but we have not checked your bag,” Faith recounted her encounter at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
41-Year-Old Appeals Her Sentence
Omollo was later arrested and arraigned in court on charges of drug trafficking, which she tried to plead her innocence for, but the judge could not believe her since she stated that Africans traveling to Malaysia were spoiling their country.
Faith later filed an appeal in coordination with her family and the Kenyan Embassy, and a three-judge bench determined that she should be sentenced to 12 years, with some time off starting from when she was arrested, and the judges stated that she was going back to Kenya because she was innocent.

However, Foreign Affairs PS Korir Sing’oei intervened in her situation, which later led to the Vietnamese government suspending her prosecution.
