Kenyatta University alumna Lisa Bukhala has been awarded the prestigious Leon Battista Alberti Award by the University of Notre Dame.
This marks a milestone achievement for one of Kenya’s rising stars in architecture.
The award, one of the highest honors given by the university’s School of Architecture, recognizes the top graduate student with the highest GPA in the post-professional architecture program.
Bukhala, who earned her Bachelor of Architecture degree from Kenyatta University, has consistently demonstrated academic excellence and an unwavering commitment to community-centered design.
Currently serving as an intern with Notre Dame’s Housing and Community Regeneration Initiative, she is involved in critical urban planning and redevelopment projects focused on sustainable and inclusive housing.

Prior to her graduate studies, Bukhala gained hands-on experience as an Architectural Technician at Nairobi Metropolitan Services and Studio Design Group.

She also worked as a Clerk of Works at Menzies Aviation, where she oversaw construction projects with a focus on quality assurance.
The Leon Battista Alberti Award has been a hallmark of distinction at Notre Dame, named after the Renaissance architect whose humanist principles continue to influence architectural education today.

Created to honor exceptional academic achievement, it is awarded each year to the graduate student who earns the highest-grade point average across their entire post-professional degree program.
Named after the Renaissance polymath Leon Battista Alberti, whose influential writings such as De re aedificatoria laid the foundations of modern architectural theory.
The award links modern academic rigor with the humanist ideals of classical architecture.
Recipients of the Alberti Award include standout scholars such as James Bradley Lengen in 2021 and Sylvana Gomez Mendoza in 2016, affirming a tradition of sustained excellence among Notre Dame’s postgraduate cohorts.
