The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) has announced the completion of the commissioning of the 400kV Isinya – Konza and the 400/132/66kV Konza substations, in a bid to improve reliability and guarantee power supply to Konza Technopolis.
In a press release on June 13, 2026, KETRACO noted that this is an important milestone in reinforcing the nation’s electricity transmission network and improving the reliability of power supply.
“Commissioning of these new lines is a major milestone in strengthening the transmission network and providing quality and reliable electricity supply in the lower eastern region of the country,” read an excerpt from the press statement.
The project comprises a 98-kilometre-long double-circuit high-voltage transmission line and a highly advanced 400/132/66 kV substation that will significantly improve electricity supply reliability in the lower eastern region and facilitate the growth of Kenya’s landmark smart city.
Managing Director, Eng. Kipkemoi Kibias highlighted the significance of the project as a step towards the modernization of the country’s electricity transmission network.
“The successful energization of the Isinya–Konza Transmission Line and Konza Substation strengthen the reliability of the national grid and guarantees quality power supply to Konza Technopolis and surrounding areas,” KETRACO MD stated.

Konza Technopolis and Vision 2030
KETRACO noted that the transmission line will play a key role in powering Konza Technopolis, a flagship project under Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda aimed at transforming the country into a knowledge-based economy.
The infrastructure is also expected to support industrial, commercial, and residential developments in the region by ensuring stable and adequate electricity supply.
“This project is critical in supporting industrialization, attracting investments, and advancing Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda,” read part of Kibias statement.
National Transmission Network
The Company further stated that, beyond Konza Technopolis, the project will facilitate the distribution of electricity in the lower parts of the eastern region, improving access and reinforcing resilience in the national grid.
The enhanced interconnectivity and alternative transmission pathways are projected to reduce system vulnerabilities and help meet rising electricity demand across the country.
“The energization represents another major milestone in building a resilient transmission network capable of supporting Kenya’s growing electricity demand and long-term development aspirations,” read part of Kabia’s statement.

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO)
KETRACO is a state-owned corporation that is responsible for building, operating, and maintaining high-voltage electricity transmission lines and substations in Kenya.
Its main function is to transport electricity from generation plants to distribution companies like the Kenya Power, which eventually supplies it.
KETRACO does not generate or sell electricity, but it works with power generation companies such as Kengen, electricity distributors such as Kenya Power, and government agencies to fund and implement infrastructure projects.
Konza Technopolis
Konza City is a Kenyan smart city project initiated by former President Mwai Kibaki and designed to position the country as a leading hub for technology, innovation, and business in Africa.
It is located along the Nairobi-Mombasa Road, across Machakos, Makueni, and Kajiado counties, and is the central pillar of Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda.
