National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has confirmed that Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua is facing an imminent impeachment motion.
The Kikuyu Member of Parliament confessed he was among the 300 legislators who endorsed the motion.
“It is true there is an impeachment against the Deputy President and as a member of parliament of Kikuyu I have already appended a signature to it,” he stated on Sunday, September 29.
He further stated that he supports the impeachment motion because the Deputy President is interfering with government operations.
Ichung’wah explains why he supports Gachagua’s impeachment
“I will support that impeachment motion to stop a process where the government is being undermined and sabotaged from within,” Ichung’wa stated.
The National Assembly Majority Leader further emphasized that the discussions leaders should be focusing on are those related to development, rather than tribal politics.

“It is not tenable, it is not feasible that for another three years, it will be politics of Mount Kenya, politics of the lakeside, and politics of the coast region. Let us discuss the politics of development, which will enable us to fulfill what we promised the Kenyan people.”
Ichung’wah reiterated that he appended his signature to Gachagua’s impeachment because he believes the second in command has been championing politics of ethnicity.
Kikuyu Legislator’s Further Explanation on Impeachment
“I do not believe in the politics of ethnicity, I do not believe in the politics of undermining and sabotaging a government that we formed,” Ichung’wah explained.
The Kikuyu legislator also alleged that the Deputy President is planning to form political alliances with several opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections, namely Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Democratic Alliance Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Roots Party leader Professor George Wajackoyah.
Meanwhile the DP earlier on September 9 urged leaders calling for his impeachment to respect the will of the people.
While speaking at a church service at the Methodist Church in Meru County, Gachagua urged those leaders not to fall into the temptation of overturning the will of the people.

“The will of the people is supreme. Elections were held, and the president and I were elected on a joint ticket for five years. That is the will of the people,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua further stated that overturning the will of the people through other means would not sit well with the electorate.
“Let us all agree that the tenets of democracy say you must respect the will of the people because it is sovereign.”
It remains to be seen whether Gachagua’s impeachment will materialize.
