The Kithure Kindiki led Ministry of Interior has clarified an error made while officially announcing an increase of salaries for police officers across the country.
In a statement, the ministry indicated that the taskforce led by former Chief Justice David Maraga recommended a 40 per cent pay increase for the officers.
Kindiki explained that the payment will be made in three phases with the first 20 percent increase already sent to constable officers in July instead of the earlier stated 40 percent.
However, while the salary will increase for some officers, the percentage will be gradually decreasing for police officers with higher ranks.
“We wish to clarify that the Taskforce recommended 40 per cent pay increase for the officers.”
“The payment will be made in three phases. In the first phase, an increase of 20 per cent has already been implemented effective July 1, 2024, for constables, with the percentage gradually decreasing for higher ranks. We regret the error,” stated the ministry.

Kindiki Earlier Announcement on the Salary Increase
Earlier, the ministry noted that uniformed officers had received a basic salary increase of 40% for constables, with the percentage gradually decreasing for higher ranks, down to a 3% increase for senior officers in the first phase.
The statement explained that officers within the Kenya Prisons Service and the National Youth Service will also begin receiving the increased pay starting September 2024.
“The reform process is set to take four years, from 2024 to 2028, guided by a strategic framework that focuses on four core areas that is leadership within the three services, oversight and accountability, institutional capacity development and human resource management, and operational preparedness and logistical capability,” the PS said.
Further, the Ministry has established and gazetted Technical Committees on Development of the Legal and Policy Frameworks covering the three Services to ensure seamless implementation of the reforms.
