The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has outlined procedures for the 2024 teacher assessments, emphasizing portfolio evaluation alongside theory.
KNEC released procedures entailing guidelines for the conduct of the year 2024 Upgrade Programmes for Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (UDPTE) and Diploma in Early Childhood in Teacher Education (UDECTE) Summative Assessment for Art and Craft.
The assessment for Art & Craft in 2024 will consist of two modes that is Theory paper (60%) and Portfolio assessment (40%).
“The year 2024 Art & Craft assessment will be done using two modes. The Theory paper will account for (60%) and Portfolio assessment (40%),” stated KNEC in statement.
To ensure clarity and adherence to the assessment process, the KNEC provided detailed instructions on teachers’ assessment.
KNEC Portfolio Instructions
Portfolio assessment guidelines, crucial for the evaluation, can be accessed through the Teacher Education portal by logging in at https://[email protected].
This accessibility according to KNEC facilitates an organized approach to understanding the assessment criteria.
The teacher’s union further pointed out the role of teacher trainers, noting that they are tasked with guiding teacher trainees on portfolio organization.
“The teacher trainers will be expected to guide the teacher trainees on how to organize the portfolios as per the scoring guide provided. Note that all documents relating to the assessment are confidential and must be handled as such, at all times,” reads KNEC statement in part.
This guidance according to KNEC ensures that trainees understand the expectations and criteria for portfolio assessment.
KNEC further emphasized the importance of procedural understanding.
Need for Understanding Portfolio Assessment
Highlighting the need for precision, KNEC stated that teacher trainers must thoroughly comprehend and adhere to the advance instructions for portfolio assessment.

“The teacher trainers are expected to read and correctly interpret the advance instructions for portfolio assessment and follow the procedures as outlined. Individual teacher trainees will be expected to compile and maintain a portfolio to be presented for assessment,” stated KNEC.
According to the council, this comprehension ensures consistency and fairness throughout the evaluation process.
In tandem with trainer responsibilities, KNEC stressed the individual accountability of trainees noting that each of them is entrusted with compiling and maintaining a portfolio for assessment.
In preparation for the assessment, KNEC called for proactive communication with trainees.
Acknowledging the significance of informed preparation, it recommended that trainees be fully briefed on the assessment mode.

Finally, to ensure a seamless evaluation process, KNEC sets clear timelines and monitoring mechanisms.

The assessment period is scheduled from 24th May 2024 to 10th July 2024, with an immediate requirement for score uploading by teacher trainers upon conclusion.
“The assessment will start on 24th May 2024 and end by 10th July 2024. The uploading of the scores should be done online immediately after the end of the assessment period by the teacher trainer. KNEC will monitor the progress and authenticity of the scores of all the trainees,” stated KNEC.
