The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has revealed the total number of candidates set to sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) Exams.
KNEC divulged the figures on October 3 during the launch of the 2024 national examinations and assessments season. KNEC CEO, Dr. David Njengere said that the council is set to administer the exams to a total number of 2,279,414 candidates across the country.

According to the CEO, KCSE shall be administered to 965,501 candidates in 10,565 centers while 1,303,913 candidates are set to sit for KPSEA in 35,573 centers.
Dr. Njengere further said that the council has acquired new containers to ensure smooth administration of the examination and assessments.

“To ensure smooth administration of the examination and assessments, KNEC has acquired 41 new containers, bringing the total to 617 for secure storage and transportation of exam materials,” he said.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on its part maintained its commitment to ensure new measures announced in September this year for the administering of KCSE national examinations, in a bid to promote integrity, are affected.

The Commission’s Staffing Director Lentoijoni said KNEC’s directive was part of fresh guidelines for the recruitment of this year’s KCSE supervisors and invigilators in which it directed that they shall be rotated among schools every week.
New measures
KNEC directed that supervisors, invigilators and center managers will be required to declare interest of the examination center they are posted to.
On the other hand, KCSE supervisors will be rotated on a weekly basis as opposed to the previous format where one was tasked at a given school for the entire period of exams.
As a result, the supervisors must prepare brief handing over notes for the incoming supervisor.
KNEC added that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed in a center they have served in the last two (2) consecutive years.
KNEC Guidelines
In the guidelines, the council said that supervisors as well as invigilators for KCSE examination must be secondary school teachers, a change from previous years where only supervisors were high school tutors while invigilators were drawn from primary schools.

In addition, KNEC said that only supervisors and invigilators who have registered in the CP2 system will be deployed to manage the 2024 national examination and assessments where their claims shall be processed.
The teachers in schools with learners of Stage-Based Pathway will invigilate their own learners whereas for every 10 learners, there should be one invigilator.
KNEC also said that these invigilators will be required to sign the declaration form like other centers and that no supervisor or center manager will be deployed for KILEA centers.
The center managers were tasked to ensure attendance of the supervisors and invigilators posted in their centers by confirming their details and the workstation on a daily basis.
The 2024 KCSE exams are scheduled to begin on October 22 and end on November 22, with the rehearsals set to begin on October 18, 2024.
On the other hand, KPSEA will begin on October 28 and end on October 30, with rehearsals set to begin on October 25, 2024.
