The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has broken its silence on the mysterious death of Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni, a 39-year-old patient who was found dead in his hospital bed on Friday, February 7.
In a statement, KNH detailed the events leading up to the incident, revealing that Kinyua had been admitted to Ward 7B on December 11, 2024.

Gilbert was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder that caused severe muscle weakness, affecting all his limbs.
Due to his condition, he required total nursing care, including tube feeding.

However, despite the seriousness of his illness, KNH stated that his condition had remained stable throughout his stay.
“Kinyua was referred to KNH from St. Mary’s Hospital, Lang’ata on December 11, 2024.

“He was admitted to Ward 7B, which specializes in the management of patients with nervous system disorders, otherwise known as neurological conditions,” stated the hospital.
At the same time, the hospital’s management clarified that the ward where Gilbert Kinyua Muthoni was admitted did not care for mental health conditions.
“We wish to clarify that this ward is not designated for mental health conditions, as has been erroneously reported in some quarters,” added the hospital.

Gilbert Found Dead at KNH
The hospital noted that on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Kinyua’s condition was observed to be stable.
Furthermore, night shift nurses conducted routine checks at 9 PM, midnight, and 3 AM without noting any abnormalities.
However, at 6 AM, nurses conducting morning rounds discovered his face covered with a blood-stained sheet.
When they uncovering him, they found him motionless, with a deep cut wound on his neck.
KNH immediately cordoned off the area as a crime scene and alerted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which took over the case.

“The nurse immediately alerted her colleagues, security personnel, the attending doctor, and the hospital’s management,
The next of kin were promptly contacted and requested to come to the hospital. Our team of psychologists and counselors was mobilized to provide support to the family and to break the sad news to them,” explained the hospital.

Improved Security Measures at the Hospital After the incident
Also, the hospital confirmed that it is fully cooperating with law enforcement agencies, adding that a post-mortem examination of the deceased will be conducted under the direction of the DCI.
It has also heightened security measures to ensure the safety of over 1,800 patients, staff, and visitors, including stationing more police officers at the hospital.
KNH has also deployed psychologists and counselors to provide support and a 24-hour helpline has been set up for family members seeking further assistance.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and remain committed to transparency and accountability throughout the investigation process,” the hospital stated.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation, assuring that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
