A fire that broke out at Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi on Monday, March 11, razed down seven staff quarters.
According to a statement by the Kenya Red Cross, the fire broke out at around 7:34pm forcing the administration and first responders to begin evacuation.
The Kenya Red Cross and the Nairobi County fire department took over the scene and began extinguishing the fire.
At around 10:00pm, the first responders reported that the fire at Lang’ata Women’s Prison had been contained.
However, the extent of the damage caused by the night inferno had not yet been established.
“The fire has been contained, thanks to the efforts of the County Fire Team and Kenya Red Cross first responders.
“Seven staff quarters have been affected. Ongoing assessments are underway to evaluate the extent of the damage and plan for recovery,” Kenya Red Cross indicated.

Fire at Nacico Building Before Outbreak at Lang’ata Women’s
The reports came a few hours after another fire outbreak was reported at the Nacico Co. Op Chambers building in Nairobi CBD.
The building, which hosts several businesses, is located at along Moi Avenue.
Further, the fire was reported to have started at one of the shops in the building, but it’s cause was yet to be identified.
However, no injuries had been reported at the time of publishing.
Police officers and rescue team sealed off the scene of the incident to allow for smooth operation.

Fires in Nairobi
In the February, cases of fire outbreaks in Nairobi have left more than ten people dead while more than 280 others injured.
Aside from the fatal gas explosion in Embakasi East Constituency, another fire burnt down a children’s home in the same constituency on March 3 leaving property destroyed and many children homeless.
On March 5, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna called for investigations into the challenges faced by the Nairobi County disaster team.
According to the lawmaker, some of the employees at the fire department were not qualified to be in office.
