The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has unveiled a new health insurance scheme tailored for the country’s legal fraternity.
In a statement issued on July 16, LSK urged advocates to prioritize their well-being as they continue to uphold justice.
Dubbed Wakili Medicover, the new product was launched on July 15 in Nairobi in partnership with Octagon Africa Financial Services and Britam General Insurance Company (K) Ltd.
The medical cover is designed specifically for lawyers and legal practitioners, offering a wide range of affordable healthcare benefits.
LSK President Faith Odhiambo led the launch, calling her fellow advocates to take care of themselves as they take care of others.
“Health is critical to our ability to fight for justice. As advocates, we must now also fight for ourselves—for our well-being, for our families, and for peace of mind,” Odhiambo said. “Wakili Medicover should mark the end of the era of health-related crises among our members. This product tells every advocate: you matter.”

The plan, developed by Octagon Africa’s subsidiary Octagon Insurance Brokers Limited (OIBL) and underwritten by Britam, offers inpatient coverage ranging from KES 500,000 to KES 10 million per family.

It also includes free maternity, dental, and optical services, and significantly reduced waiting periods for chronic and pre-existing conditions.
Additional features include ICU and surgical coverage, overseas referrals, organ transplant support, home nursing care, last expense benefits, and a Personal Accident Cash Rider of up to KES 1 million.
Odhiambo said the initiative fulfills one of her administration’s pledges to improve member welfare and professional sustainability.
“This is a win for our members, a tangible achievement that underscores our focus on inclusion and wellness,” she said. “Let this be a legacy of transformation.”
Octagon Africa Group CEO Fred Waswa explained the product’s design as a direct response to the mental and physical strain lawyers often endure.
“Wakili Medicover was born from a deep understanding of these challenges. It is more than just a policy, it’s a commitment to dignity, wellness, and financial protection,” said Waswa.

“This collaboration with LSK is not just a transaction. It is a relationship built on trust and shared vision.”
Win for Lawyers and Legal Practitioners
OIBL was recently recognized as 1st Runner-Up for Most Customer-Centric Broker and Best Broker in Technology Application at the 2025 Think Business Insurance Awards.
Britam CEO James Mbithi also lauded the initiative as a forward-thinking step toward meeting the unique needs of legal professionals.
“Wakili Medicover is built to deliver value beyond the cover. From seamless outpatient processes to proactive wellness initiatives, it’s about making healthcare work for the advocate,” Mbithi said.
With the legal profession in Kenya continuing to expand in both size and responsibility, LSK’s new medical cover is poised to improve the quality of life for advocates while setting a new precedent for sector-specific insurance offerings in the region.
