Lenana School has announced a change of leadership following the decision by Chief Principal William Kiplagat Kemei to take early retirement.
Kemei’s retirement took effect on August 1, 2026, at one of Kenya’s established national boys’ schools, a position he has held since 2017.
In a notice dated August, the Lenana School Parents Association, which also announced the transition.
“Dear Parents and Guardians,I write to formally notify you of the transition of the Chief Principal, Lenana School. Mr. William Kiplagat Kemei has opted for early retirement with effect from 1st August 2026. On behalf of the Parents Association, Parents and Guardians, I extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Kemei for his dedicated service and leadership at Lenana School,” read the notice in part.
Kemei Opts for Early Retirement
According to communication by Jonah Marahpash, Chairman of the Lenana School Parents Association, Kemei opted for early retirement effective August 1.

The notice did not disclose the reasons behind the decision or indicate whether Kemei’s retirement followed a specific administrative development.
The Parents Association thanked Kemei for his contribution to the school, describing his service and leadership as dedicated.
“On behalf of the Parents Association, Parents and Guardians, I extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Kemei for his dedicated service and leadership at Lenana School,” the notice stated.
Kemei has been serving as Lenana School’s Chief Principal since 2017
Kemei’s professional background is anchored in more than 28 years of experience in education administration, with his career progressing through teaching and school leadership positions.
He is an alumnus of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), where he undertook his academic training, and he also holds professional training as a Certified Professional Coach.
During his time at Paul Boit High School, Kemei was recognized for his leadership and management abilities and received the Principal of the Year Award (POYA) for Eldoret West.
Kemei also taught at Tambach Boys High School in the early 2000s.
His professional progression eventually saw him attain the Chief Principal grade, the highest level in the career structure for school heads under the Teachers Service Commission.
At Lenana, William successfully grew the school’s capacity to handle over 1,700 students while introducing Competency-Based Education (CBE) senior school program.
Koech Takes Over as Lenana School Principal
The Parents Association also announced that Mr Koech would take up the new assignment at Lenana School following Kemei’s departure.
The Parents Association welcomed Koech to the institution and said additional information concerning the transition would be communicated later.
“We welcome Mr. Koech as he takes up this new assignment. Further communication on the transition will follow in due course,” Read the notice.
Lenana School is one of Nairobi’s long-established secondary schools and has a history dating back to 1949, when it was established as the Duke of York School.
It was later renamed Lenana School in 1969. The institution is located off Ngong Road in Nairobi and has traditionally been associated with strong academic, sporting, and co-curricular programmes.
