A student leader at the Lenana School has given detailed accounts of the events surrounding the temporary closure of the school on June 2.
Unrest during night preps at the school led the Board of Management and the school administration to agree on suspending learning activities at Lenana.
Due to the unrest, the Chief Principal of Lenana School issued a notice to parents and guardians to pick up their children by 8:00 a.m. on June 2 and await the school’s communication.
“Following the restlessness and disturbance experienced during preps in the school last night, the Board of Management and the school administration have resolved to temporarily release all students to allow for restoration of normalcy and a comprehensive assessment of the situation,” Lenana Chief Principal directed.
With parents and guardians picking up their children from the learning institution, a student leader has reported that on the day of the unrest, the school had taken the prefects on a hike in the Ngong Hills.
While heading back to the school, the Lenana School deputy principal informed the prefects that a strike was ongoing at the institution, without specifying the extent of the chaos.
Upon arrival at the school at around 8: 30 p.m., the school was surrounded by police officers. The bus carrying the prefects was directed, and the police boarded the school bus with flashlights.
At the basketball court where the bus was redirected, the police demanded that all student leaders on board should maintain silence as they got into the up school.
According to the prefect, a mob of students had formed, shattering the window and scattering glass everywhere.

Lenana School Destruction
On the night of June 1, the prefect recounts that students not only smashed the windows but also broke into the school chapel, destroying it.
Further, the students proceeded to beat up the school principal by throwing stones at the principal.
“They even beat the principal, throwing stones at his head, leading to the principal being taken out of the school,” the school prefect recalled.
In addition to throwing stones at the principal, the students are said to have hijacked the school speaker system and switched off all the CCTVs in the school.
After switching off the CCTVs, the students broke all the CCTVs and even broke into the teachers’ offices, according to the prefect.
A car belonging to the rugby teacher was broken into during the chaos, destroying the car windows.
Further, the students broke into the teachers’ office and collected papers to set the office on fire.
However, before the fire broke out, the prefect intervened; the prefect noted that the police present were doing nothing to help.
According to the prefect, students at the school broke into the school administration’s office and occupied the kitchen, stealing bread.
