The national volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, called out the government on August 22 over unpaid allowances as they prepare to face Germany in the World Championships in Thailand on Saturday, August 23.
The national women’s team, in a recorded video, said the failure by the Ministry of Sports to disburse the promised funds has left them worried about the welfare of their families back home.
The players revealed that the Ministry of Sports had assured them that all allowances would be settled before departure to cater to their travel needs and to support their families during the competition.
However, the funds have not been released, leaving the team in a difficult position.
“The promise was that before we travel, we were supposed to get all our allowances paid into our accounts; however, it never happened,” one of the players said.
The athletes added that the situation has affected their concentration in Thailand, with their focus divided between competing on the global stage and worrying about their families’ well-being in Kenya.
Reduced Squad After Financial Strain
The financial challenges also had a direct impact on team preparation. Initially, the squad had 20 players, but the number was reduced to 16 due to a lack of funds.
The players said they were informed by the team’s deputy president that there was no money to take them to camp. Training only resumed after sponsors intervened to cover some of the costs.
“The information we were getting from the team’s deputy president was that there was no money to get us to camp. Eventually, sponsors intervened, and we got into the camp,” the Malkia Strikers disclosed.
Ministry’s Silence and Blocked Grievances
The team further stated that it had an opportunity to meet Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Salim Mvurya before departure and had hoped to raise the issue directly with him.

However, the players allege that their coach stopped them from voicing their concerns.
“We are told they are waiting for the Ministry. CS Mvurya met us, but we were stopped from telling him our grievances,” the players claimed.
They now want the Ministry of Sports and other stakeholders to step in urgently to resolve the matter and ensure they receive the allowances owed to them.
Malkia Stikers Cite Neglect
The Malkia Strikers have consistently brought pride to the country, winning African championships and earning spots in global tournaments despite financial struggles.
Yet, they say their current plight highlights neglect at a time when other national teams, such as the Harambee Stars, have recently received significant financial incentives from the government.

“It’s hard to give your best on the court when your mind is back home, worrying about whether your children have food or if your landlord will lock the door,” the team decried.
As they take to the court in Thailand, the Malkia Strikers insist that their fight is not just for victory against global opponents but also for recognition and support from those entrusted with managing sports in Kenya.
