Equity Group Founder and Billionaire Businessman Dr. Peter Munga is a towering figure in Kenya’s financial landscape, who turned a modest Ksh 5,000 startup into one of Africa’s largest banking institutions.
From founding Equity Building Society (EBS), a micro-finance institution based in Kangema town in 1984, to guiding Equity Group Holdings into a regional financial powerhouse, Munga’s journey is one of grit, vision, and remarkable transformation.
The turning point came in 1993, when he brought in a young accountant, Dr James Mwangi.
Together, they transformed EBS into Equity Bank by 2004 and, later, Equity Group Holdings in 2014. Their goal was clear: democratize banking.
That humble investment was the seed that would grow into Equity Group Holdings, a financial giant with operations across six African countries and a customer base nearing 20 million.
His leadership steered the Bank into making its debut at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) on August 7, 2006.
Munga served as Equity Bank Chairman till 2018, when he retired after serving the lender for 35 years.
Early Life and Education of Peter Munga
Peter Kahara Munga was born on August 28, 1943, at Nyagatugu village on the slopes of Aberdare Mountains in Rwathia location, Kangema Division, in Murang’a County.
He comes from a humble background in Murang’a, raised by his father, Benson Kahara, who worked as a washerman (dhobi), and his mother, Beth Nyambura, a peasant farmer and casual labourer on nearby plantations.
Like many boys of his time, he spent his early childhood performing domestic chores and herding his neighbours’ animals, mainly cows and sheep, because his family at this point possessed no herds.
The 81-year-old started off his education journey at Nyagatugu Primary School. In 1952, Munga and his mother left Nyagatugu to help his father in the new business venture.
He was later admitted to Mugoiri Intermediate School. However, he was unable to raise the required Ksh 250 in tuition fees. As a result, he opted for the more affordable school, Kiangunyi Intermediate School.
At Kiangunyi between 1956 to 1959, Munga sat for and passed his Intermediate Examinations (CPE), which enabled him to join Gaichanjiru Secondary School, where he completed his Cambridge School Certificate in 1963.
Munga furthered his education, attending the Kenya School of Government and pursuing studies in the United States of America (USA).
He earned a Certified Public Secretary – Kenya (CPS) certificate and acquired two diplomas in Human Resource Management, Financial Management, and Public Finance and Planning from Harvard in the mid-1960s.
He holds two honorary doctorates, Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) from The University of Nairobi, and Entrepreneurship (Honoris Causa) from Kenya Methodist University.
Peter is a consummate family man. Several years into his working career, he met and eventually got married to a secondary school teacher, Rose Njambi Kieme. Together they were blessed with seven children, five boys and two girls.
