The White House has taken to social media to highlight the recent recognition of First Lady Melania Trump’s renovation of the White House Tennis Pavilion, which earned a prestigious 2025 Palladio Award for outstanding achievement in traditional design.
In the final months of her first term tenure as First Lady, Melania Trump unveiled a significant architectural addition to the White House: a classical tennis pavilion situated on the South Lawn.
Melania Trump’s renovation
In December 2020, First Lady Melania Trump announced the completion of a year-long renovation of the White House tennis court area, marking one of her final contributions to the presidential residence before the transition to the Biden administration.
The project, which included the construction of a new Tennis Pavilion and the refurbishment of the existing court and Grandchildren’s Garden, was a deliberate blend of classical design, historical preservation, and personal vision.
The Tennis Pavilion was designed to reflect the neoclassical architecture of the White House, particularly the East and West Wings.
Key features such as a colonnade, parapet wall, and fanlight windows were incorporated to ensure the new structure harmonized with its surroundings.
The project was approved in June 2019 by the Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission, with planning dating back to early 2018.
The new structure, blending seamlessly with the White House grounds, features white limestone cladding and a copper tin roof, drawing inspiration from classical Greco-Roman architecture.
This design choice reflects the Trump administration’s advocacy for traditional architectural styles, a stance that has been both praised and critiqued.
Award-winning renovation
The 2025 Palladio Award, announced by Traditional Building, recognizes the pavilion’s excellence in the Commercial “New Design & Construction” less than 30,000 square feet category.
Steven W. Spandle, Architect, LLC, was honored for their work, selected from over 200 entrants by an esteemed jury of design practitioners and architecture critics.
This recognition not only validates the architectural merit of the project but also explains its role as a private space for leisure and gathering for future First Families, as Melania Trump expressed in her statement upon the pavilion’s completion.
The timing of the White House’s post is strategic, coinciding with the 2025 US Open, a tournament that President Donald Trump frequently attended before his presidency.
