Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has addressed claims that he is broke after he indicated that he would be offloading some of his multimillion-shilling property.
Calling out to the people circulating the rumors, Sonko stated that all who were waiting for him to go broke will wait until the Indian Ocean dries up.
In a public statement dated April 12, Sonko stated that he would no longer remain silent as lies about him were being spread.
In addition, he stated that claims of his being involved in the sale of drugs were pure propaganda and a politically based accusation.
“I will not stay silent while lies are spread about me. I have never sold drugs; those were politics and propaganda. I thank God for this journey. I will not allow my name to be destroyed,” part of the statement read.
Sonko called out that anyone who held evidence of his involvement in any illegal businesses should present the evidence to end the accusation.
Mike Sonko also added that his blessings have been multiplied and that his enemies, who made the accusation, have no control over him, and that God should forgive them for talking about what they did not understand.
Mike Sonko Finances
Sonko’s clarification followed the recent online posts circulating online suggesting that the former Nairobi governor was actually experiencing financial crises.
Public figures such as Chris Sambu defended the former governor, stating that Sonko could never go broke and the name of the former governor could not appear in the same sentence as the word “broke”.

In late March this year, the Court of Appeal dismissed an application by the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) on January 22 that sought to block Sonko from accessing his bank accounts.
ARA had argued that the funds in Sonko’s account were acquired through illegal businesses that should be investigated under the Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act.
After the ruling was made, Sonko explained that he had spent six years awaiting justice to be served, adding that he was grateful that the court made the ruling based on truth and not personal hatred.
“Six years of waiting. Six years of fighting. Six years of suffering. Today, I thank God justice has prevailed. God is great, and His timing is perfect. I’m also grateful to the courts for judging based on facts and evidence, not personal hate,” Sonko stated.

Sonko Business Sale
On April 1, Mike Sonko posted a video on his X account about the sale or lease of one of his businesses.
He, however, noted that he was not selling or leasing the Volume VIP Club in Mombasa because he was broke, but because he was giving up alcohol to draw closer to God.
In addition, he stated that the decision is yet to be made on whether to sell or give away all his alcohol stock as he marks a new chapter in his life.
