Ministry of Education Shuts Down 348 Boarding Schools [LIST]

The Ministry of Education (MoE) has ordered the immediate closure of boarding sections in 348 primary schools across the country. 

According to the notice, the schools failed to meet safety and compliance standards.

This follows an extensive assessment conducted in September and October 2024 to evaluate the adherence of these institutions to the Safety Standards Manual for Schools (2008) and the Registration Guidelines for Basic Education Institutions (2021).

In a circular dated November 27, 2024, Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang, revealed that the schools in question were found to have grossly violated key safety provisions.

“The assessment established that some institutions grossly contravened the provisions of the Safety Standards Manual for Schools in Kenya (2008).

“Further, they did not adhere to the standards prescribed in the Registration Guidelines for Basic Education Institutions (2021). A total of 348 schools of those assessed were consequently NOT approved to host boarding learners,” the notice read in part.

Consequently, the Ministry has instructed regional, county, and sub-county directors of education to enforce the closure immediately.

The re-opening of the affected boarding sections will only be permitted after a thorough re-registration process, ensuring that the schools comply with all necessary safety measures.
