Academic Voyage Strengthens Tourism and Cultural Exchange
The MV World Odyssey is visiting Mombasa as part of Semester at Sea, a global study‑abroad programme run by the Institute for Shipboard Education in partnership with Colorado State University.
The initiative allows students to pursue academic coursework on board while travelling across continents.
During their six-day stay, the students and faculty are also expected to participate in academic exchanges with Kenyan institutions, including the Technical University of Mombasa and Kenyatta University’s Mombasa Campus.
Floating Universities and the Mv World Odyssey
A floating university is a cruise ship converted into a moving school. Students travel around the world while taking classes on board, just like they would on a normal campus.
The most famous programme of this kind is Semester at Sea, where students live and study on a ship that has classrooms, a library, study spaces, and even sports and recreation facilities.

“Passengers and crew will explore some of Kenya’s most iconic destinations, from the turquoise waters of Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park & Reserve, to the wildlife-rich plains of Tsavo East National Park, and the scenic landscapes of Shimba Hills National Reserve,” mentioned KWS.
These study trips visit several countries within one academic term. Students attend lectures while at sea, then take part in field trips and learning activities whenever the ship docks.
Early versions of floating universities emerged in the early 1900s, and the modern model began to take shape in the 1960s with the rise of ship-based study-abroad programmes.
The MV World Odyssey is one of these ships. It operates as a full university campus at sea, complete with lecturers, staff, classrooms, student cabins, and a range of learning and co-curricular activities.
It has been a foundation of global maritime education, enabling participants to combine academic learning with real-world exposure through port visits, field excursions, and cultural immersion.
The programme typically follows multi-continent itineraries spanning Europe, Asia, Africa, and beyond.
