Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has extended the designation of 13 areas as security-disturbed and dangerous.
In a notice dated July 10, 2025, Murkomen stated that the extension takes effect from 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, and will remain in force for thirty (30) days.
However, the declaration of the areas as “disturbed and dangerous” may be withdrawn or extended further at the discretion of the Cabinet Secretary through a subsequent Gazette notice.
“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 106 (6) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, extends the declaration made on 9th May 2025, declaring parts of Marsabit County as security disturbed and dangerous, namely,” read the notice.
This extension follows a declaration initially made on May 9, 2025.
Murkomen Extends Declaration of 13 Areas as Dangerous Zones
The affected areas, all located within Marsabit County, include:
- Hillo Gorgora
- Hillo Orofa
- Hillo Walkite
- Hillo Tanzania
- Hillo Irress Abamartille
- Hillo Gootu
- Hillo Tessum Qalicha
- Hillo Karray
- Hillo Hudda
- Hillo Qoranjido
- Hillo Irress Shindia
- Hillo Rabaalee
- Hillo Godde Haroressa

Kanja Orders Return of Firearms
Inspector-General (IG) of the National Police Service, Douglas Kanja, has prohibited the possession of firearms by the residents in the above areas.
“The National Police Service Act, 2011, the Inspector-General of National Police Service prohibits the possession of arms in the following parts of Marsabit County declared as security disturbed and dangerous by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration,” read the notice.
According to the directive, and in line with the ongoing security operation, all residents of the affected areas are required to immediately surrender any firearms in their possession to the nearest police station, police post, police camp, or National Government Administration Office.
The surrender must take place during daylight hours for safe custody.
All surrendered firearms will be returned to their lawful owners once the notice is revoked or terminated.

Dangerous Zones
Kipchumba Murkomen declared 13 additional areas in Marsabit County as security-disturbed and dangerous through a Gazette notice on May 9, 2025.
In the same notice, IG Douglas Kanja urged locals in these areas to surrender all firearms in their possession with immediate effect.
According to an Interpeace Report on Marsabit County, levels of violence have remained extremely high from 2005 to date. Marsabit town and its surrounding areas have, for months, experienced near-daily killings, armed robberies, and communal raids.
“Marsabit experiences daily acts of violence, including murders, property and livestock theft, and occasional armed confrontations between conflicting communities. The roots of its cyclic violence date back to the pre-independence period, but violence has escalated since 2005,” read the report.
