Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has addressed the public scrutiny over his perceived expensive personal spending habits, particularly his love of high-end watches and designer shoes.
In a statement made on July 6, Murkomen proposed that Parliament urgently introduce and pass a Lifestyle Audit Bill.

“In line with the current National Conversation and to address the concerns that state and public officers are living beyond their means, I propose that Parliament urgently introduces and passes Lifestyle Audit Bill,” stated Murkomen.
According to the CS, this legislation would establish the parameters for investigating the living standards of state and public officers to ensure consistency with their lawful income.

Furthermore, Murkomen suggested that the bill should set maximum cost limits for personal wear, outfits, and cars for government officials.
“The Bill should among others set the maximum cost of personal wear/outfits, cars etc . I Submit, ” he said

Murkomen’s statement comes amid a broader national conversation about the lifestyles of state and public officers.
Citizen’s Raise Concerns Over the Lifestyles of State Officials
The country’s political elite have come under intense scrutiny for their lavish spending habits, sparking widespread public outrage and calls for greater accountability.
The controversy has been fueled by the opulent lifestyles of President William Ruto’s allies, who have been accused of flaunting their wealth in the face of economic hardship.

The opulence of Ruto’s allies has manifested in various ways, from lavish parties and grand weddings to the acquisition of luxury vehicles and high-end real estate.
These displays of wealth have become a source of resentment, with many Kenyans feeling that their leaders are out of touch with the realities faced by the majority of the population.
Murkomen Controversial Displays of Wealth
Among such leaders, is Murkomen who since his appointment has been severally spotted donning expensive fashion items.
Earlier this year, the CS made headlines after he was captured wearing a Ksh 1.6 million Hublot Classic Fusion Ceramic King Gold watch.
In February 2023, he attended a Manchester United vs Barcelona match at Old Trafford where the VIP tickets sold for not less than Ksh 100,000.
Additionally, in early June the CS shared photos of himself wearing Ksh 96,000 pair of Philipp Plein sneakers, sparking further criticism from Kenyans on X.
Murkomen Defends His Lifestyle
In a past address Murkomen defended his controversial fashion choices and the way he chooses to live, attributing his success to hard work and dedication.
He emphasized that he worked very hard in school, which ultimately led to his current position as a high-ranking government official.

“I worked very hard in school, and I believe that my success is a result of my dedication and perseverance.”
Murkomen dismissed his critics, arguing that he had earned the right to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
“I have worked hard to get to where I am today, and I believe that I have the right to spend my money as I see fit,” he said.
