Launch and Use of Expressway
The Nairobi expressway was officially launched in July 2022 by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to address extreme traffic jam in the city.
The initial budget of the project was estimated to cost Ksh65.2 billion as provided by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) but it rose to Ksh87.9 billion.
Earlier on October 16, the Chinese-built expressway announced that it emerged as the top performer in two categories at the Afrika Mashariki Transport Awards 2023.
The road’s electronic toll collection (ETC) system won the “Best Technological Innovation in Transport” award and secured the “Sustainable Transport” award.
Furthermore, the ETC system enables drivers to conveniently pay for using the expressway.
To use the service, drivers register by providing their details and vehicle information. A chip is then fitted to the vehicle, allowing them to top up cash for the service.
