Nairobi Water & Sewerage Company Limited has issued a public notice addressing the intermittent water supply affecting various estates within the capital city.
The announcement, delivered by the Managing Director, pointed out the impact of flooding on water distribution in the county and outlined measures being taken to mitigate the situation.
Despite recent heavy rainfall leading to overflowing dams, the water supply remains constrained by the city’s installed production capacity.
“Our water supply to the City is therefore limited to the installed production capacity. This means that even when we have our dams overflowing, the water supply will remain constant- We cannot go beyond the installed production capacity,” stated the MD.
Why Water Rationing is Necessary Amid Dams Overflowing
With a daily demand exceeding 900 million litres and a maximum daily production capacity of 525.6 million litres, Nairobi Water Company indicates that water rationing is necessary to ensure equitable distribution.
The Equitable Water Distribution Program was implemented to address this challenge, aiming to provide each customer with water at least once a week.
In addition, the Managing Director noted in his statement the significance of this program, stating, “This is done through our Equitable Water Distribution Program whose purpose is to enable each customer receive water at least once a week.”
However, the announcement acknowledges that the recent flooding has exacerbated the situation, leading to the washing away of water supply pipelines in certain areas.
