Nyeri County Children’s department officers now want residents to collect certificate of good conduct from their nannies before offering them employment.
Kungu Mwaniki, an officer at the children’s department urged parents to be cautious of whom they employ to take care of their children.
He underscored the importance of knowing the nannies next of kin so as to avoid cases where people hired to safeguard the children are the ones who harm them.
“Know the next of kin to the person you are employing. The person you are employing is the person you are leaving the responsibility of the children and because of this, know that children face a lot of danger,” he cautioned.
This comes after police in Nyeri freed a woman accused of allegedly taking a one-year-old child left under her care to the forest without the knowledge of his parents.
According to the police, the parents decided to settle the matter out of court as the nanny has an history of mental instability.
The baby’s mother, Joyce Wanjeri said that she had left her child sleeping when she requested the nanny to prepare his breakfast the morning of the abduction.
She added that when she came home in the evening, both the child and nanny were missing.

10 Day Search of Eloped Nanny and Baby
Moreover, the baby’s father, Michael Kariuki, had to suspend his work engagements back in Kisumu to come back to Nyeri to help his wife in searching for their child and the nanny.
“When I received that call, up to now, I haven’t been myself,” Michael said adding that they searched door to door, for 10 days.
Michael acknowledged that the community members offered great support in helping them search for the nanny and their baby.
“All the leads we have by now have come from the community,” he acknowledged.
One of their neighbors informed them that the nanny was seen going into the Kigoini forest with a child.
“The journey has not been easy because we have gone around so much especially within this area,” a community member helping in the search told the press.
The residents eventually found the nanny and the baby at around 8pm both of whom reportedly appeared weak and hungry.
Well-wishers took the two to the nearest home which was nearly a kilometer away and fed them before reporting to the police who then reunited the baby with his parents.
