Trans Nzoia Governor Natembeya is under fire for allegedly allocating Ksh 5 million for coffins in the county’s budget.
In a statement dated Monday, April 21, 2025, Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang accused the governor of prioritising trivial expenses in the county budget rather than allocating funds to critical issues such as medicine.

“Allocating Ksh 5 million for coffins instead of essential medicines is not just poor planning—it’s a tragic reflection of misplaced priorities,” the statement read.
Furthermore, the senator urged Natembeya to reconsider this decision and instead allocate more funds to hospitals in Trans Nzoia County, as the hospitals are facing a shortage of medicines.

A post seen by the Kenya Times highlighted the budget, which included several allocations such as subscriptions to newspapers, magazines, and periodicals; awareness and publicity campaigns; purchase of uniforms and clothing; and maintenance expenses for motor vehicles.

The allegations have sparked an online debate with mixed reactions regarding the allocation of funds for such issues.
A user named Melly argued, “Counties are cash cows for governors; they can write anything on those papers… Shameless.”
Another user, George Simiyu, defended Senator Chesang by stating, “Super Senator Allan Chesang, you are doing your oversight well. Keep it up.”

Meanwhile, other users defended the governor’s allocation decision.
Social media user Victor Onyango noted, “Take 5 million and divide it by the minimum value of a coffin. That means the county has only helped 167 families, which I guess is a small number for a whole county with the highest mortality rates.”
Another user, Kiplangat Buzeki, added, “What’s wrong with the governor supporting vulnerable families who have lost their loved ones?”
Cherargei Calls for Trans Nzoia Governor’s impeachment
For some time, Natembeya has been at odds with several United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leaders, including Allan Chesang and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, who have been calling for Natembeya’s impeachment. Cherargei has accused the governor of tribalism, poor development, and corruption, stating that Natembeya’s actions violate several articles of the Kenyan Constitution.
“Governor Natembeya should be impeached for stoking tribal animosity, division, poor development, and corruption allegations. These offences are impeachable under the Constitution of Kenya 2010 for violating Articles 10, 27, 73, 74, 75, and 174,” he stated at a public gathering in April 2025.
