Former Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto had a plan to replace Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya with his ally.
Speaking on February 4, Gachagua claimed that Ruto and his allies are targeting Natembeya due to his advocacy for the unity of the Luhya community.
He further alleged that there was a plan to impeach Natembeya and replace him with his deputy, Philomena Bineah Kapkory.
“Natembeya is being opposed because he is calling for unity within the Mulembe nation as it should be. There was a plan to impeach him.
The Luhya people in Trans Nzoia should know that the deputy governor is from the president’s community. He is the person who will take over,” Gachagua stated.
However, Gachagua advised Members of County Assembly (MCAs) not to be used to achieve such a goal.
He argued that Natembeya’s mistake was enlightening Luhyas on their potential influence if they united, given their significant vote base.
Gachagua urged Luhya leaders to unite and speak with one voice at the national level.
“My message to the Mulembe nation is that they should stop identifying with their sub-tribes. Unite as a community, and when you reach 5 million votes, look for me and others so that we can make plans,” he said.
He emphasized that the Luhya community would have substantial influence in the next government if united.

Luhyas Supporting Raila
Gachagua also expressed concern about the region’s reliance on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, despite its population being larger than Nyanza, Raila’s home region.
Gachagua criticized Raila for appointing John Mbadi as Treasury CS instead of Wycliffe Oparanya, as previously agreed within the Azimio Coalition.
“You should come to the negotiation table directly. We don’t understand why Luhyas have to go through Raila to reach the national table. You even have more votes than Nyanza,” he said.

Gachagua Talks of Leading Gen Z
Gachagua clarified that he did not sponsor the Gen Z protests but would have loved to lead them.
He said the Gen Z the people who will decide the next group of leaders during the 2027 election.
“I did not lead Gen Z, nor did I give out any money. But they are good children, and I would have been very happy if they had allowed me to lead them,” he said.
“I could have become very popular because they are the ones who will decide the leader of Kenya.”
