The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has announced the new ranks and salaries for police officers following President William Ruto’s directive to increase police salaries beginning in July 2024.
NPSC Chairperson Eliud Kinuthia stated that the commission is responsible for reviewing the remuneration of police officers and civilian staff in the National Police Service (NPS) in collaboration with the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
“In the fulfillment of the promises and pledges, the National government established the Maraga’s taskforce whose recommendations include review and increase in Police Officers’ salaries pursuant to this recommendation and the mandate of the NPSC,” he said.
The commission has increased and reviewed the salaries of Police Constables from a basic salary per month at entry. Entry- means those fresh from college.
New Salary Structure for Police
The salary for a Police Officer Constable has been increased from Ksh 21,645 to Ksh 25,645. This is equivalent to an increment of Ksh4,000.
This also implies the longest-serving Police Constable (served more than 20 years) will earn a minimum monthly gross salary of Ksh 50,145 up to a maximum of Ksh 69,640.

Furthermore, the commission has increased the salaries of a Senior Assistant Inspector General from a monthly basic salary at entry of that rank from Ksh 200,899 to Ksh 221,915. This is an increment of Ksh 21, 026 higher.
Long-serving Senior Assistant Inspector General will earn a basic salary of a minimum of Ksh 310,725 to a maximum of Ksh.409, 365.
He mentioned that the Commission offers incremental notches each year to the police officers at different cadre levels.
“Our structure allows a police officer to serve up to 20 notches of salary increment each year. Those who begin start at notch one which is Ksh 21,645 the following year they move to notch two and you serve in that one rank for up to 20 years if promotion does not come and that structure allows that,” he stated.
The accounting officer for the National Police Service (NPS) has been tasked with ensuring that all officers, both those serving within the country and those deployed in peacekeeping missions such as Haiti, receive their salaries, benefits, and allowances,” NPSC Eliud Kinuthia said.

National Police on Promotion of Constables
Kinuthia stated that Police Constables aged between 53-59 years represent a special category of senior officers nearing retirement.
He highlighted that some of these officers have served in the ranks of Police Constables for over 30 years with clean disciplinary records, indicating that their stagnation is not due to any fault on their part.
Consequently, the commission directed the acting Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, to review the files of officers in this age group who have maintained clean records and recommend them for promotion based on merit.
