A businessman named Charles Mukhwana was reportedly killed on Wednesday night, February 26, 2025, at Matungu Market by gang members. In a statement, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa condemned the killing of the shopkeeper.
“I strongly condemn the senseless killing of Mr. Charles Mukhwana, a shopkeeper at Matungu Market, last night by an unknown gang. It is concerning that this attack occurred just about 100 meters from Matungu Police Station,” read the statement.

“All security agencies must intensify efforts to restore and ensure safety of residents and property from such criminal activities.
According to Barasa, the shopkeeper’s murder was followed by another robbery at Ejinja Market.”
Fernandes Barasa Condemns Kakamega Businessman Killing
Barasa also expressed concern over a surge in insecurity in Kakamega County and called on the regional security team to take swift action.

“The rising trend of insecurity in Matungu is unacceptable. I urge the Regional Commissioner and his entire security team to take decisive action and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
All security agencies must intensify efforts to restore order and ensure the safety of residents and their property from such criminal activities,” Barasa added.

The shopkeeper’s death has also been condemned by other local leaders, including Osanga Boniface, an aspiring candidate for the Matungu Parliamentary seat in 2027.
“Today, the people of Matungu woke up to the heartbreaking news of armed robberies in Matungu Constituency, affecting both Matungu Market and Ejinja Market. It is deeply saddening that our business community cannot operate safely due to these gangsters,” stated Osanga.
“Such gangs often grow from these misguided groups. I urge the Matungu OCS to escalate the investigation and bring the culprits to justice.”
Kakamega Businessman Death Sparks Protests
The businessman’s death sparked protests at Matungu Market, with traders engaging in running battles with police officers on the morning of Thursday, February 27, 2025.
A video seen by The Kenya Times showed some protesters hurling stones at police officers, who responded with teargas to disperse the crowd.

Matungu residents have decried crime incidents over the years.
In April 2024, two guards were killed by unknown assailants at Koyonzo Market.
The incident angered area residents, who stormed Koyonzo Police Station and vandalized property.
