The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has banned social media influencer Joseph Kairo Wambui popularly known as Khalif Kairo from issuing free vehicles.
In a statement dated November 12, the Licensing Board argued that such promotions are illegal and contrary to provisions of the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act Cap.131.
“The Board has noted that your company has been conducting illegal promotions contrary to the Betting, Lotteries and Gaming Act Cap.131.Laws of Kenya. One such promotions is the just concluded ‘win a 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer that you were conducting in collaboration with payless Africa.
You are therefore advised to cease conducting such illegal promotions with immediate effect and ensure authorization from the Board in your future promotions,” the statement read.
Kairo banned from giving free away cars
In his response, Kairo said “Hehe, Hata kupeana gari za bure tena ni shida” loosely translated to mean “Hehe, even giving away free cars is a problem nowadays.”
Kairo has been making headlines for his generous gestures including gifting cars.
He also vowed not to stop making the offers, adding that he will visit the BCLB next time to ensure compliance.

Recently, the businessman gifted a student from the Kabete Polytechnic a car.
The Kai and Karo car dealership founder was conducting promotions in partnership with Payless Africa, a new player in the mobile money transfer sub-sector.
Through this collaboration, Payless Africa rewarded one loyal Payless user with a brand-new Mitsubishi Lancer car.

Khalif awards Kabete Polytechnic student a car
The recipient, a student named Patrick, transitioned from walking to driving a Mitsubishi, all thanks to having the Payless app installed on his phone.
Patrick was going about his daily routine when he unexpectedly met Kairo and became a car owner.
Kairo casually inquired whether Patrick had the Payless app on his phone. After confirming that he did, a brief exchange followed, culminating in Patrick receiving the car.

Several social media users have responded to BCLB’s statement.
An X user by the name Nellard said “there’s a legal mechanism for promotions and corporate gifts. They attract taxes too.”
On the other hand a user by the name Rogers said ” Tonnes of regulation will destroy any country!
