The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has summoned the CEO of Kai & Karo Limited Joseph Kairo Wambui popularly known as Khalif Kairo regarding his car dealership business.
In a summon notice dated September 19, KRA stated that it has initiated investigations into Kairo’s tax affairs covering the period from January 2018 to the present.
“Pursuant to the provisions of section 59 (1) (C) of the Tax procedures Act, you are hereby required to appear before the commissioner for a meeting at our offices,” read part of the KRA document.
Khalif Kairo is expected to appear for a meeting at the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) offices in Nyeri on September 26, 2024, at 10.00 am.
“The agenda of the meeting shall be to discuss your tax matters, and you may therefore be accompanied by one person conversant with these matters,” the document reads further.
KRA Asks Khalif Kairo to Provide Records of His Business
Furthermore, KRA said that pursuant to the provisions of section 59 (1) (a) Kairo is required to “avail for examination books of accounts and any other document as may be required within 7 days from the date hereof.”
Kairo is expected to present audited financial statements, trial balances, sales ledgers, and sales invoices for the company.

In addition, Kairo was asked to provide purchases’ ledger and purchases invoices, general ledger and stock valuation record.
Others include a wear & tear and asset schedules and bank statements for the company and directors.
Kairo Claims Plan is to Sabotage Him
However, Kairo has accused a former business partner of conspiring with officials from KRA to harass and frustrate his business operations.
He insists that his taxes are in order and has been compliant with the law during his nine years of running the business.
“An old partner of mine is using KRA officials in Nyeri to frustrate me. He has bribed them huge amounts of cash and has gone ahead to threaten me on this app. Guy also happens to be facing quite a number of criminal cases where I am a witness,” he said.

Adding to complexity, Kairo revealed that he is currently involved in a legal dispute with a former business associate, who is allegedly suing him for more than Ksh30 million.
The CEO stated that the former partner had previously attempted to obtain court orders to close down Kai & Karo, but the courts dismissed these efforts.
“I have a pending case somewhere sued for over Ksh30 million and at one point, dude sought orders to shut down Kai & Karo, but courts declined. I know what am saying,” he tweeted.
