The government through the Ministry of Interior and National Administration has addressed rising security concerns in Northeastern Kenya particularly in Marsabit County which have resulted to a rise in attacks that have left scores injured or killed.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo on Wednesday, August 14 met leaders from Marsabit County following the attack on Monday that left seven dead.
Gunmen shot and killed seven people and torched a lorry they were traveling in at the Elle Dimtu area of Moyale, Marsabit county.
PS Omollo in a statement said that he met the leaders to address the rising security concerns where they agreed on urgent actions.
According to Omollo, the actions will require interventions by both the National and County Governments.
“With elected leaders from Marsabit County, we held a security meeting focused on addressing the rising insecurity concerns and agreed on urgent actions that require interventions by both the County leadership as well as the National Government,” said Omollo.
“Through engagements with security agencies, elected leaders and the local communities, we are committed to foster peace and ensure lasting stability in the area.”
The meeting came following a press release by leaders from Marsabit county on insecurity along the Kenya-Ethiopia border where the Monday attack happened.
Marsabit Leaders Address Rise in Attacks
“It is with profound shock and disappointments that we the leaders of Marsabit county bring to the fore insecurity incidences that has resulted to unabated and continuous killings, abductions and destructions of properties along the Kenya-Ethiopia border,” said the leaders.

They said that the border attack involved a number of unknown assailants who stopped a vehicle that was transporting food items from Nairobi to Dukana.
According to them, the vehicle was carrying 10 passengers at the time of the attack with eight out of the ten passengers aboard unfortunately shot dead and their bodies alongside the motor vehicle itself burnt.
On the other hand, one passenger was severely injured and another one, a minor escaped unhurt.

Foreigners Abducted
In addition, the leaders said that two missionaries of Korean origin were abducted and held incommunicado to date on the same day.
The leaders further said that there have been a series of attacks along the border. They revealed that on August 9, an attack happened at Golole on the border of Kenya and Ethiopia which involved a bulldozer belonging to Ethiopia that was burnt down by some unknown militia.
They condemned the attacks with the strongest terms possible, as they condole with the families, friends and relatives of the deceased.
On the other hand, they urged the National Government through the State department of Interior to take up the matter with the seriousness it deserves in order to bring these attacks to a halt so that calm and normalcy is restored once and for all.
