New details have emerged in the investigation of Kaspul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were who was gunned by a lone assailant in Nairobi.
According to latest investigations by detectives, it has been revealed that among the four suspects arrested on Sunday, May 5, is a police officer.
The sleuths apprehended the officer after he was captured on CCTV at the scene of the crime. He was nabbed in the Pangani area, Nairobi County.
Additionally, a vehicle allegedly used by some of the suspects to flee the scene of the shooting incident was recovered at the police officer’s home which is registered under his name.
As captured by CCTV cameras, the same vehicle was reportedly parked outside the Embassy House near the Parliament Buildings on Wednesday, April 30.
Police Officer Implicated in Kaspul MP’s Death Probe
At Around 12:00 p.m., the suspects had lunch at a restaurant within the CBD before they returned to the parking lot.
Later that evening, after MP Were made his way out of the Parliament buildings, the suspects began to trail him.
At around 7:30 p.m., while the MP was near the roundabout next to the city mortuary, a pillion passenger on a sports motorcycle shot the MP.
The assailants then quickly fled the scene using their sports motorcycle. During this escape, one of the assailants disembarked from the motorcycle and entered the vehicle that was waiting near the Railways Bus Station in the central business district.

On Sunday, May 4, the National Police Service (NPS) provided an update on the investigation into the murder of the slain MP.
In a statement, the NPS confirmed that they swiftly conducted an operation that led to the arrest of four suspects who had been positively identified at the crime scene. Some of the arrested suspects are believed to be affiliated with organized criminal gangs, such as “Mjahidin,” which has been linked to armed robberies in the Eastlands area of Nairobi.
“NPS investigators and the technical team are working tirelessly, leveraging their expertise to establish the motive behind the fatal shooting and to bring all those involved to justice,” the statement reads.
The police urged the public to remain calm and to refrain from speculation as investigative teams diligently work to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation. Furthermore, the NPS advised individuals not directly involved in the investigation to avoid making comments that could hinder the ongoing efforts.
President Ruto Vows to Ensure Speedy Investigation into Were’s Death
Following MP Were’s death, leaders across the political divide called for a thorough investigation into his assassination, led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga and Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
In response, President William Ruto pledged to take decisive action following the assassination of MP Ong’ondo Were.

Speaking during an interdenominational prayer service in Migori on Sunday, May 4, the President ordered the Inspector General of Police to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
He also stated that the government will pursue the collaborators of the shooters, emphasizing the need to protect the lives of Kenyans.
“We have lost our MP, Ong’ondo Were, just the other day. I want to assure you that we will find those who killed him. They will not succeed; they will have nowhere to hide. We will go after them and their collaborators,” he said.
