Safaricom has issued an update to its customers concerning full restoration of the internet following disruptions caused by undersea cable cuts from Sunday May 12.
In a statement on Thursday May 16 the Internet Service Provider (ISP) said they achieved this by acquiring an additional capacity from other undersea cable providers.
“We are happy to inform our customers and stakeholders that we have now resumed full network capacity and stability following last Sunday’s undersea cable cuts that affected some of our services,” Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa noted in the statement.
“We sincerely thank our engineers for working round the clock to keep the country connected through optimization and quickly onboarding additional capacity from the undersea cables.”
Safaricom Resumes Full Network Capacity
Meanwhile, the telco giant CEO said they will continue to monitor the network to ensure stability of services as they work closely with impacted undersea cable suppliers for a faster resolution on the repair works.
He further apologized to Safaricom customers who may have experienced slower than expected speeds during the period.

“We sincerely apologize to customers who may have experienced slower than expected speeds on our network during this period and thank them for being patient as we worked to get back to normal,” Ndegwa added.
Safaricom on Sunday May 12 responded to concerns raised by customers about slow internet speed from the mobile network service provider.
The service provider said the poor internet connection was as a result of an outage of the undersea cables that deliver internet traffic in and out of the country.
It further noted that they had activated measures to resolve the issue and keep their customers connected as they awaited full restoration of the cable.
Reasons for Internet Outage in the country
The massive internet outage was a result of faults in the under-sea cables that connect the region to the rest of the world through South Africa.
It swept across East Africa, cutting out internet access to more than 80 million people with Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Madagascar and Tanzania impacted.

Consequently, in Kenya, the outage impacted users on major networks and internet service providers, including Safaricom and Telkom Kenya, as per complaints received from users online.
Liquid Intelligent Technologies Group Chief Technology and Innovation Officer (CTIO), Ben Roberts reported that faults occurred in the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy) and the Seacom cables.
“Three cable cuts in Red Sea (Seacom, EIG, AAE1) remain unrepaired,” Roberts posted.
