A family is in mourning after their kin was killed by a lioness in Emakoko village, in Rongai.
Peace Mueni, a 13-year-old student, was attacked by the lioness while playing with her friends in their compound.

According to one of the witnesses, the incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, April 19, when the lioness sneaked into the compound before attacking Peace.
“The lion came into this compound and entered the house. There were three children, but it grabbed one and took her to the river. We searched all night. When we finally found the child, about 80% of her body had been eaten,” narrated a village elder who witnessed the incident.

Peace’s father, Kennedy Kigen, said he heard a child screaming in the compound. Upon rushing outside, he saw the lioness carrying away his daughter. He tried to rescue her but was unable to.
“I was nearby when I heard screams. I ran to help and found that it was my child being carried away. I tried to follow, but I couldn’t save her,” he said.

Following the tragic incident, the family is now appealing to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for compensation over the death of their daughter.
“They should help me because my child has been eaten. I don’t know what to do or where to turn,” the grieving father added.
The KWS has promised to look into the matter and capture the lioness.
54-Year-Old Man Killed by an Elephant
Elsewhere, a similar incident involving human-wildlife conflict occurred on Friday, April 18, 2025, in Kyeni, Nyeri County. An elephant trampled a 54-year-old man while he was grazing his livestock.
The man succumbed to serious chest injuries while receiving treatment at Karatina Level 4 Hospital.
For a while, several complaints have been launched at KWS regarding wildlife invading residential areas in Rongai.

Early in April 2025, a viral video from a CCTV camera showing a lioness raiding a certain residential area was circulating on social media, with the majority of online users raising concerns about the safety of the residents living near the wildlife area.
Later on, KWS dispatched its Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) team to address the situation after the video went viral.
