Kirinyaga County Governor Anne Waiguru has called on Kenyans to back efforts aimed at increasing the number of women in leadership roles ahead of the 2027 elections.
She emphasized that boosting women’s representation in leadership roles will advance gender equality and promote more inclusive governance.
Speaking during the launch of G7 strategy in Machakos, Waiguru said the group will rally Kenyans to support the reelection of female governors who will be seeking their second term in office and election of additional ones to realize the G24 dream.
The G7 strategy was officially launched in March in an event attended by President William Ruto. It will also be launched in all the devolved units headed by female governors.
Waiguru Speaks on Launch of G7 in Counties
Waiguru said the launch of the strategy in counties is meant to popularize and tailor its approach to local contexts as well as discussing how to implement robust mentorship programs that will increase the number of women in leadership across the country.
“However, we understand that to achieve our ambitious goals, we must go beyond national efforts. We must engage with women at all levels, including the grassroots. That is why we have embarked on a journey to launch this strategy across all G7 Counties,” she said.

Meanwhile, Waiguru praised Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga’s appointment as ODM chairperson, highlighting it as a significant indicator of the increasing influence of women in Kenyan politics.
The Council of Governors (COG) Chair said the achievement by Governor Wanga, adds to that of her Embu counterpart Cecil Mbarire who is the chairperson of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Waiguru mentioned that the council “take immense pride” in the achievement because UDA and ODM are the two largest political parties in Kenya.
“This embodies the very essence and momentum of the G7 which strives to empower and elevate women to the highest leadership ranks. This is no small accomplishment,” Waiguru said.

Women Urged to Vie for Political Seats
“I want you to know that we are here for you. I want to assure you that you have our full support. Through this strategy, we are committed to providing the guidance and assistance you need to succeed,” Waiguru added.
Waiguru urged male governors serving in their final terms to support their female deputies for succession or mentor women for other leadership roles.
She also called on women and other leaders to back the G7’s initiatives to advance gender equality and foster inclusive governance.
“Let us work together to build a future where women’s voices are not only heard but are integral to the decision-making processes that shape our nation,” she said.
The Governors reaffirmed that they are determined to ensure more women are elected as the county bosses, MPs and MCAs during the 2027 elections.
