Businessman and politician Philip Aroko, a suspect in the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament the late Charles Ong’ondo Were, was on Friday May 16 released on a cash bail of Ksh 300,000 by the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport court (JKIA).
In her ruling, Magistrate Irene Gichobi imposed bail conditions on Philip Aroko, including the surrender of his passport and a travel ban to Homa Bay County, the home region of the late MP.
Magistrate Irene Gichobi at the JKIA Law Courts dismissed the Director of Public Prosecutions’ (DPP) request to extend Philip Aroko’s custody by an additional seven days.
The case against him is set to be heard on June 3, 2025.
Philip Aroko Terms of Bail
Further, the court directed that he refrains from contacting any co-accused persons, the victim’s family, or anyone linked to the ongoing investigation.
Additionally, in order to safeguard the investigation, the court cautioned Aroko not to tamper with evidence or interfere with the legal proceedings.
Under the bail terms, Philip is obligated to regularly report to the investigating officers and assist by providing any evidence related to the case. In addition, the court warned him that any breach of the bail conditions could result in the revocation of his release.

Probe into Kasipul Murder Case
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, that detectives arrested Amos Barasa Kasili, a suspect linked to the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were.
According to the DCI, it was established that Barasa served as the rider of the motorcycle with registration number KMFZ 413W, a Bajaj Boxer, which the assailants used to trail the MP’s vehicle and later as a getaway bike after the attack.
During his arrest, Barasa was found in possession of the motorcycle in question.
“In an intelligence-led operation, detectives have apprehended Amos Barasa Kasili at Kibera Darajani area, linking him to the tragic shooting of the late Kasipul MP, Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, which occurred on April 30, 2025,” read part of the statement.

Number of Suspects Arrested
The murder investigation into the death of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were has seen the arrest of 12 suspects linked to the murder case.
The names of those who have been arrested include businessman and politician Philip Aroko , Alan Omondi the MP’s bodyguard, his driver Walter Owino, William Imoli, and Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng.
Detectives also apprehended Isaac Kuria, alias Kush, believed to be the shooter, who was arrested while attempting to flee to Tanzania.
At the same time, the latest arrest involved Amos Barasa Kasili, identified as the motorcycle rider who trailed the MP’s vehicle and acted as the getaway rider after the attack. Barasa was found in possession of the motorcycle used during the incident.
