Newspaper columnist and popular political commentator Gabriel Oguda has announced his return to social media platform Twitter (X).

Oguda on July 2, 2024, announced his return on X, having taken a break since his alleged abduction that came at a time of heightened protests against Finance Bill 2024.

The vocal critic of President William Ruto’s government had earlier on Facebook given the reason behind his break which he took after going missing for days, saying that his X account had been messed with.

In a statement on Tuesday, Oguda while announcing his comeback revealed that his account which boasts of more than 900,000 followers had successfully undergone a recovery process.

The newspaper columnist also thanked the expert for helping him recover his account which he had earlier alleged that it had been messed with.

Oguda’s absence on X had sparked different emotions among his followers as they wondered whether he was okay.

Through a Facebook post on June 29, the vocal critic of President Ruto while confirming that he was back after his abduction said that his abductors had “messed” with his X account while he was away.

He further recalled how he was dumped in the cells of Kajiado police station in Kajiado County and later narrated the ordeal in his column on the Nation newspaper.

“Tell the people on Twitter that I’ve sent my greetings. They messed up with my X account but they’re about to discover that God is not Kamau,” lamented Oguda.

Reports indicated that he was abducted in the wee hours of Tuesday June 25, with his last post being shared at around 2: 18 am, alleging that men believed to be police officers were at his gate.

“Guys, cops are at my gate,” Oguda wrote.

Oguda’s brother Zachary Oguda further confirmed the abduction in a post online saying that the newspaper columnist was taken away from his house by men believed to be police.

His case was among a list of incidents captured during the protests where some vocal activists were seen being abducted by unidentified people.

The Police Reforms Working Group (PRWG-K) in an earlier statement on June 29 revealed that it had documented 34 such cases during the period.

PRWG-K demanded prompt action from IPOA to investigate the abductions and other listed instances of violations by the police and in great detail.

According to the group, 23 deaths, 34 enforced disappearances/abductions and 271 injuries had been abducted during the period.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) have all condemned the abductions and called for an immediate end to this trend.
