A four-year-old baby died on Wednesday night May 1 after a massive fire erupted in the Waruku neighborhood of Kangemi, Nairobi County.
The fire left many residents homeless and destroyed property of unknown value.
Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai confirmed the fire incident stating that the fire ravaged over 30 households.
He further appealed for help from well-wishers in aiding the victims who were largely affected by the fire outbreak.
“Following the fire in Waruku this evening, we have lost over 30 households and also a 4-year-old baby in the inferno. Rest in Peace,” he shared on his official X account.
“We are appealing for help with blankets, clothes, utensils, mattresses, food, water, and anything else you can offer to help the victims regain a semblance of normalcy in their lives.”
Fire Razes Down Houses in Kangemi
The cause of the fire was yet to be established by the time of publishing.
Alai had earlier posted, “We are asking for help in Waruku. Huge fire outbreak.”
“Fire in Warugu, Kangemi. If have any contacts with emergency response unit, please make a contact. Our neighbors are on fire, please call if you can,” an X user Tim Kipchumba said.

Videos seen by The Kenya Times circulating online showed huge fire and residents could be seen running around trying to put out the inferno that was at the moment spreading very fast.
A crowd of onlookers milled around the scene while some of the residents could be heard screaming for help.
Kenya Red Cross Nairobi branch and firefighters arrived later at the scene.
Fire Incidents in Nairobi County
Since the beginning of the year, increased fire incidents have been reported in Nairobi County leaving many homeless and a trail of destruction.
Two months ago, fire broke out at Lang’ata Women’s Prison in Nairobi razing down seven staff quarters.

In February, a gas tanker exploded, leading to massive destruction of property, injuries and even deaths. The explosion resulted in three fatalities and left over 200 people injured in Embakasi East.
Similarly, in the same month, some 63 residents of Soweto Ward in Nairobi’s Embakasi East Constituency were left homeless after a night fire.
A month later, a third tragic incident unfolded in Mradi, Embakasi, after fire razed a children’s home to ashes, leaving victims without shelter.
