A new volunteer recruitment drive linked to the Obama Presidential Centre has sparked backlash online, after reports revealed that the organisation is seeking unpaid help from Americans while one of its top executives earns hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.
The controversy centres on the Obama Foundation, which is preparing to open the highly anticipated Obama Presidential Centre on Chicago’s South Side later this year. According to the Daily Mail report on March 15th, the foundation is recruiting between 75 and 100 unpaid volunteers to serve as “ambassadors” at the site once it opens to the public.
The volunteers would greet visitors, provide directions across the campus, and help explain exhibits in the museum tower and other facilities on the site. Foundation officials say the program reflects the long-standing emphasis on civic engagement that has been associated with Obama’s career since his early days as a community organiser in Chicago.
However, the recruitment effort quickly became a flashpoint on social media after critics pointed to the salary of Valerie Jarrett, a longtime ally of Obama who currently leads the foundation.
Tax filings show Jarrett earned approximately $740,000 in 2024 while serving as CEO of the nonprofit. The figure has fueled accusations from some commentators who argue that asking Americans to volunteer their time while top officials earn six-figure salaries sends the wrong message.

The Obama Foundation has defended the initiative, saying volunteers will play an important role in welcoming visitors and bringing the centre’s mission to life. Officials also noted that the centre will employ hundreds of paid workers in addition to volunteers.
When it opens, the Obama Presidential Centre will include a museum tower, an athletic centre, and a branch of the Chicago Public Library. The complex is part of a broader redevelopment effort aimed at boosting economic activity on the city’s South Side.
According to projections cited by the foundation, the center could generate roughly $3.1 billion in economic activity over the next decade and support thousands of construction and service jobs tied to the project.
Further details from reports about the project show that the Obama Foundation has significantly expanded its staffing and budget in recent years as construction of the centre nears completion.
Federal tax filings indicate that the foundation’s overall spending on salaries and benefits has risen sharply, increasing from about $18.5 million in 2018 to roughly $43.7 million in 2024 as the organisation grew its workforce.
The filings also reveal that several former officials from the Obama administration now hold senior roles at the foundation and receive six-figure compensation packages. Some executives have reportedly earned between $300,000 and $400,000 annually, reflecting the foundation’s expansion as it prepares to operate the large Chicago campus.
As reported by The New York Post, the Obama Presidential Centre itself sits on a 19.3-acre site in Chicago’s Jackson Park and is estimated to cost about $850 million to build. The campus will include a 22-story museum tower dedicated to the presidency of Barack Obama, along with an auditorium, sports facilities, gardens, and a branch of the Chicago Public Library.
Officials behind the project say the centre is expected to attract roughly 600,000 visitors annually once it opens. Organisers also plan several days of community events tied to the opening celebrations, which are scheduled to coincide with Juneteenth festivities marking the end of slavery in the United States.
