The executive director of the Association of Media Women in Kenya (AMWIK) Patience Nyange has been appointed as the new spokesperson of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
IGAD through a statement on March 19, 2024, made the announcement noting that the appointment was done by its Executive Secretary Dr Workneh Gebeyehu.
“We are thrilled to announce and welcome Patience Nyange to the family effective March 2024. Patience Nyange joins our team as the Spokesperson, Office of the Executive Secretary, H.E Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu,” read part of the statement.
Speaking to The Kenya Times, Patience confirmed the news about her appointment and revealed that she started working at her new duty station at the IGAD Headquarters in Djibouti on March 19, 2024.
“Honestly, I am excited about this appointment. It’s an honor and privilege to serve at IGAD. It’s the Lord’s doing and it’s beautiful. I am not only representing my country regionally, but globally. I look forward to seeing what doors it opens for me,” she said.
This new appointment means that she will be leaving her position as the Executive Director at AMWIK, a post she has held since November 2022.
With nearly two decades of experience spanning diplomacy, media, communications, diplomacy and international public relations, Patience has created and accelerated brands’ communication strategy and recognition.
Patience Nyange’s career
Patience has been at the helm of AMWIK, a media organization in Kenya with 400 women in the media industry, where she advocated for gender equality and leveraging media as a tool for social change.

Additionally, she has served as a Council Member at the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) from October 2019 to October 2022.
Nyange has also held the position of Assistant Director at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) from April 2016 to December 2020 where she played a pivotal role in promoting and protecting human rights across Kenya.
Her communications expertise has seen her serve as a Communications Advisor in the Ministry of Devolution and Planning where she provided strategic communication support to advance government initiatives.
Nyange’s career in the media industry started in Mombasa where she worked as a Presenter and Producer at BARAKA FM in 2007 where she was in charge of Swahili broadcasting and news reporting.

In addition, her media career journey also includes brief stints at British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Media Action, and Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Communications, Electronic Media) degree from Daystar University and a Master of Arts (MA) in Diplomacy and International Studies at the University of Nairobi from 2009 to 2013.
In addition, Patience Nyange is a beneficiary of the prestigious Chevening Program which saw her earn a Master of Arts (MA) in International Public Relations and Global Communication Management from Cardiff University, which she completed in 2020.
Furthermore, she holds a Diploma in Intercultural Communication from Gimlekollen School of Journalism and Communication, Norway.
IGAD noted that Patience will bring her many years of experience, expertise, and passion for effective communication, to elevate the Authority’s voice and mission not only in the region but globally.
