Police issued conflicting accounts regarding the events that unfolded on Sunday, March 24, involving the fatal shooting of a Kawangware resident by a police officer associated with State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed.
According to the police report, Corporal Mohamed Yussuf stated that he was being followed home by three unidentified criminals.
He allegedly fired at the attackers them in self-defense. However, eyewitnesses claim that the victim, Amos Lang’at, had been playing pool with Yussuf earlier and that a disagreement broke out between them.
Lang’at was shot dead on Sunday night in Kawangware, allegedly by Corporal Yussuf. Yussuf reported the incident at Muthangari Police Station, claiming that he was confronted by three unknown men while disembarking from a motorcycle at Kwa Mungai in the Amboseli area.
Police Contradict Witness on State House Guard Shooting Civilian in Kawangware
He alleged that one of the men attempted to seize his gun, but he managed to wrestle it back and fired a warning shot before rushing to the police station to report the matter.
Yussuf also claimed that he sustained fractures to his left hand and shoulder during the confrontation.
However, several witnesses provided accounts that contradict the police narrative. The victim’s brother stated that Yussuf was well-known to their family and had been friends with Lang’at for some time.

He expressed confusion over how their disagreement escalated to violence. One witness indicated that the argument began when Lang’at grabbed Yussuf’s gun, which angered the officer.
Although the gun was eventually returned, tensions remained high. The witness claimed that Lang’at approached Yussuf with a stone, which prompted the officer to shoot him.
Lang’at was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shooting incident occurred while State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed was out of the country.
Kanja Promises Prompt Investigations on the Matter
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has promised to investigate the matter. This incident is not the first instance of a police officer misusing a firearm while on duty.
A police officer in Nakuru was apprehended for allegedly shooting a barmaid and injuring three others following a dispute over an unpaid bill.

This incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, December 13, 2023, when the constable reportedly refused to pay a bill of Sh16,000, leading to a confrontation with the barmaid.
