A section of politicians and Kenyans on X have criticized Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rebecca Miano over her support for Manchester United.
In a post just before the Manchester derby on Sunday, April 6, Miano announced that she is now supporting United.

“The latest signed fan Manchester United. Go GGMU!” Miano captioned the photo.
Lawyer and Safina Party deputy party leader Willis Otieno slammed the CS for promoting the Premier League at the expense of local sport.

Otieno explained that Miano should be advertising Kenya’s sports to the world and not vice versa.
“Imagine the CS for Tourism hyping a foreign league while local attractions and sports struggle for visibility. What a spectacular misread of the job description,” he said.
Kileleshewa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai said the CS has never supported local sports.
“Never seen you support local clubs. I wonder if you promote tourism for Old Trafford or Kenya,” Alai said.

Rebecca Miano Should Leave Office
Another X user, Samuel Wainaina, asked President William Ruto to fire Miano or direct her to resign, accusing her of showing allegiance to a foreign club.
“A state officer who demonstrates allegiance to a foreign entity should be fired if he/she has no decency to resign,” Wainaina said.
Additionally, Abdullah asked the CS to concentrate on Kenyan sports and let ordinary people follow and comment on foreign football.
“You should be marketing our own, have you ever seen the CS for Tourism in the UK wear a Gor Mahia jersey?” asked an X user called El Chapo.

No Congratulations for Kenya 7s
Others also accused Miano of supporting Manchester United instead of Kenya 7s, who had just won against Spain in Singapore 7s.
Maxwell Otieno said people who support foreign entities instead of local ones should not hold public offices.
“Did you tag the Kenya 7s team in your post where you congratulated them? I don’t know who picks such people for public offices,” he said.
Similarly, Halif said the CS should have posted a photo of her wearing a Kenya 7s jersey instead of a Manchester United jersey.
“Ingekuwa Jersey ya Rugby Kenya ingeweza sana,” Halif said.
“Not even Kenya Rugby Team,Harambee starlets, AFC Leopards,Gor Mahia, Muranga Seals, Bandari FC, Kayole starlets? Or for that matter, government teams like Ulinzi or Police,” Vincent Awange said.
