Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are holding a suspected serial killer responsible for the murders of women in Rongai, Nakuru County.

Ezekiel Kwame Mwangi, believed to be the mastermind behind several heinous crimes in the area, was apprehended by members of the public on August 18 at 1900hrs at Ngata Bridge, Ngata Sub-County.

“In a significant breakthrough, police officers from Baraka Police Station in Rongai Sub-County, Nakuru County, have arrested Ezekiel Kwame Mwangi, 19, a suspected serial killer who has been on the police radar for his alleged involvement in a series of brutal murders in the area,” the DCI stated.

Mwangi is accused of defiling and murdering five-year-old Alice Ayuma Blessing on July 14, 2024, before dumping her body in a maize plantation in the Mwangaza area.

On August 7, 2024, in Kalyet, he allegedly killed 34-year-old Florence Mueni Mwalimu by striking her on the head with a blunt object and stabbing her in the stomach.

The following day, on August 8, 2024, Mwangi is accused of raping and killing 28-year-old Moraa Mugambi by striking her on the head with a rungu. The incident occurred at Mustard Seed in Kiamunyi, along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

Mwangi was handed over to police at the Baraka police patrol base, who then transferred him to Menengai Police Station, where he is currently undergoing processing pending arraignment.

“The suspect, who is believed to have committed a series of murders within Rongai Sub-County, is being held in custody pending interrogation by the SCCIO Rongai, who is investigating the matter. A detailed report will be communicated after the suspect’s interrogation,” read a police report.

FIDA & ICJ Kenya Statement on Nakuru Killings

On August 16, the Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) and the International Commission of Jurists, Kenya Section (ICJ Kenya), demanded justice for the murders of Mueni, Mugambi, and baby Ayuma.

In a statement, the commissions noted that these murders highlight the increasing cases of femicide in Nakuru County, where women and young girls are subjected to violence, often preceded by defilement or rape.

The groups also revealed that in 2022, six women were killed within six months under similar circumstances in Nakuru.

“The deaths of Ms. Mueni, Ms. Mugambi, baby Ayuma, and others are a tragedy in Kenyan society that should never be ignored. These deaths are a severe violation of their inherent right to life, which the Constitution of Kenya protects,” read the statement.

Calls to Investigative Agencies

FIDA-Kenya and ICJ Kenya called upon the DCI, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the National Police Service (NPS) to bring the perpetrators of these barbaric acts to justice.

The groups urged the government to take immediate action to address the rising cases of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and femicide across the country. They demanded increased police presence and patrols in Nakuru County and other high-risk areas where SGBV and femicide have been reported.

FIDA and ICJ Kenya also called on the NPS to enhance community policing to foster collaboration between law enforcement and local communities in protecting vulnerable individuals.

“Form a special task force to investigate and recommend actions for addressing the rising cases of SGBV and femicide in the country, and support SGBV survivors through legal and psychosocial assistance,” they said.
