Questions Raised Over Mang’u High School’s Ksh 90K Fee Structure

Mang’u High School, one of Kenya’s national schools, is on the spot for charging school fees totaling over Ksh90,000 for the year 2024.

A photo of one of the fee structures given to parents by the institution has made rounds online, shocking many who questioned the reason for the increased fee despite a standard fee set for all national schools in the country.

According to the fee structure, signed by the Chief Principal John Kuria on October 23, 2023, the total amount of school fee set for the whole year was Ksh101, 450.

Further, the structure detailed that the government issued a subsidy of Ksh22,244 for the whole year while parents were asked to pay Ksh79, 206.

However, the administration added a Ksh11,700 fee for academic improvement programs raising the total payable amount to Ksh90,906 for the whole year.

Machogu on School Fees Increament

Earlier, while flagging off the beginning of KCPE exams across the country together with President William Ruto and other dignitaries, Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu insisted that the government would not increase the school fees.

Speaking during a visit to Kikuyu Township Primary school on Monday, October 30, he stated that the fees will remain at Ksh53,000 for national schools and extra county schools and ksh45,00 for county schools.

“We assure Kenyans that the Government is not increasing fees when they go to Form One and all of them will be placed in Form One. We have enough places and there is no school fees increment … it is still Sh53,000 for National and Extra county schools and Sh45,000 for county schools and will remain as such,” stated the CS.

As parents pay Sh53,000 for those joining Form One, the Government tops up the remainder of Sh22,244.

Also, for other categories including County and Sub-County Schools, parents pay Sh40,535 while the government tops up with Sh22,244 for each learner to give an annual fee of Sh62,779.
