About the United Russia Party
United Russia is the largest political party in Russia and holds the majority in the Russian State Duma. It was formed on December 1, 2001, through the merger of the “Unity” Party, the “Fatherland” movement, and the “All-Russia” movement.
The party was founded by Boris Gryzlov, who also served as its first chairman. The current chairman is Dmitry Medvedev, a former president and prime minister of Russia.
Vladimir Putin led the party as its chairman between 2008 and 2012 without officially joining it. He accepted the chairmanship in 2008 while serving as Prime Minister.
In the State Duma, United Russia has consistently formed a stable majority by aligning with other parties that support the president.
This majority has played a critical role in maintaining political continuity and ensuring that both Vladimir Putin and Medvedev have retained power.
