Kenyans have criticized some politicians allied to President William Ruto who claimed that the Kenya Kwanza government has reduced the cost of maize flour (unga).
Taking to X, politicians including Nyandarua Senator Methu Mihia and Millicent Omanga shared photos of 2kg maize flour retailing at Ksh.139.
Further, the politicians argued that President Ruto had fulfilled his promise to lower the cost of the essential product.
“The price of a 2kg unga has plummeted at a mind-boggling speed. This was President William Ruto promise while he took over office. It will even get better than this,” stated Omanga.
Senator Muhia posted the same photo stating that the president had reduced the prices from Ksh.230.
“This same product was retailing at 230 shillings when William Samoei Ruto assumed office. It’s an indicator that the cost of living will come down,” said Muhia.
However, the Kenyans attacked the politicians for riding on the offer by QuickMart supermarket to promote their agendas.
“You have misused this photo; you people take credit for an offer given by a supermarket,” wrote Stulla The General.
Other Needs
Also, others said the fall prices of unga is useless as along the prices of other essential commodities like fuel remain high.
“It doesn’t really matter if the price of Unga drops to Ksh.100, if the citizens don’t have the money to purchase the products since the government is looking for tactics to raid their pockets, then the drop of prices means nothing,” said Fire Lord Zuko.
Besides, other X users said the reduction in price of unga across the country is a result of the harvesting season in maize growing regions across the country.
According to David Mwend K, unga normally sells at below Ksh.100 during the harvesting season and questioned why it costs more.
“I wonder if Quickmart and Naivas are the official Kenya Kwanza government supermarkets. The way they keep advertising their promotions!” said Jeremiah Kairuki.

Ruto Unga Prices
During the State of Nation Address on November 9, Ruto said the government has put in place measures to lower the cost of living.
The President said because of his government’s efforts to distribute fertilizers to farmers, the price of maize and unga have dropped.

“We have progressively reduced the cost of fertilizer from Sh6,500 to Sh2,500, increased maize acreage under production by an extra 200,000 acres and enhanced maize production by an additional 18 million bags,” he added.
“As a result of these interventions, today a 2kg packet of maize flour is selling at a low of Ksh145 and a high of Ksh175 depending on the brand down from Sh250. A Gorogoro of maize is selling at between Sh60 and Ksh75.18.” said Ruto.
Besides, Ruto said the government rolled out a countrywide farmer registration and fertiliser subsidy program that has made available 5.5 million bags to farmers across Kenya.
